When yielding the lead from a pace line, I will signal and move clear of the line BEFORE slowing down.

On too many occasions, riders will start to slow down while still in the lead. This causes everyone else to slow down, which when not expected, causes wheel overlapping and hard braking in the back of the line. When you finally start to pull off the front, you may find that a rider has overlapped you and is being forced out into traffic by your move. It is actually better to SPEED UP as you pull off to ensure that you are clear of all following riders as you move over.

The Gliders signal is to slap your thigh and point down on the side to which you are moving. The slap is meant to give an audible signal to the next rider so they will be sure to know you are moving off. Pointing in the correct direction is especially important if you are on the right side of a double pace line since we pull off to either side from that location depending on traffic conditions.
