Show Your Magnet!

We have sent new Membership Cards to those members who were not expiring this month, and to those who had renewed by the end of February.  Most of you have also received a GCC logo bumper magnet with the card, ready to slap on the back of your car!  (Tip: move it over a few inches every few months to make sure it doesn't get too attached.) We're now caught up with Membership Cards, so we expect to send out cards for new members and renewals within a month. (Cards are printed in batches of nine cards -- we usually do a printing when we hit 27 or 36 cards.)

Brevet Series

Brevets are longer, self-paced rides ridden by randonneurs (tr: ultratourists). A sequence of four brevets of increasing distance qualifies riders to enter Paris-Brest-Paris, the oldest bicycling event on earth. PBP was the inspiration for the Tour de France which began a year or so later.

The next upcoming PBP is scheduled for August, 2023. The Gainesville Cycling Club holds brevet events every year building up to a full four-ride qualifying series for years when this venerable event is being held. In 2021 we will host a 200k and 300k. In 2022 we will host a 200k, 300k and 400k. And in 2023 will hold the full series including a 600k.

This year, the 200k is scheduled for March 20 and the 300k for April 17. See full info at https://gccfla.org/brevet/brevets.html. Sign up to ride in the Members Area.

Annual Meeting

The Gainesville Cycling Club will hold its annual meeting in May. We'll let you know the date some time in April. Due to the pandemic, we will hold the meeting virtually via Zoom, as the likely number of people from different households will likely exceed the recommended number in CDC guidelines.

In spite of the pandemic, the GCC still has things to celebrate! The Annual Meeting will include information items as part of Florida Bike Month, and other business that members may wish to conduct, including our plans as we look ahead to the 2021 Gainesville Cycling Festival.

The Annual Meeting will feature a presentation by the GCC's own Festival Director, Ana Fajardo, entitled “How to Go on A Bike Overnight". She will talk about how to go on a bike overnight adventure, including route planning, gear, and equipment, when to go, and other tips. Ana will also share her favorite local bike overnights. There will be time for a Q & A at the end. With many of us at home due to the recent COVID-19 guidelines, this is a great time to learn something new like how to go on a bike overnight—for our physical and mental health.

The Adventure Cycling Association is a good resource for bicycle travel info. You can sign up for a complimentary six-month membership and subscribe to Adventure Cycling e-newsletters with the following links:

Intersection Pedestrian Safety Outreach

FDOT District Two Safety Office is seeking your input.

The office would like to solicit information on any signalized intersections where there may be complaints about turning motorists not yielding to pedestrians or bicyclists trying to legally cross the road.

We'll use this feedback to investigate those locations and see if there are any potential signal timing adjustments we can recommend to the D2 Safety Office to implement to address the bike and pedestrian concerns.

Please feel free to reply directly to Josh at josh.reichert@metriceng.com

Thank You,
