The Board of Directors of the Gainesville Cycling Club met on Monday 10 August and discussed the question of whether to hold an in-person Gainesville Cycling Festival in 2020. Based on input from the Festival Director, who has been in conversations with key festival staff, and in light of the risks posed by Covid-19 for holding in-person events, the Board voted unanimously to postpone the 40th annual Gainesville Cycling Festival until 2021. The Board is now considering some type of virtual event later this year, and will make a decision about that in the near future.

Membership Expirations Extended

As the Club has been unable to host our usual rides, parties, and picnics for awhile, the Board has decided to extend memberships by six months. This will also apply to members whose membership expired in May and July. (If you are one of those persons and do not want to remain a member, simply reply and we'll take you off of the active roll.) Unfortunately, we are unable to extend the term of Life Members!

2020 Horrible Hundred Canceled

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Horrible Hundred 2020 will not be taking place this November. After carefully considering all options and contingencies and consulting with leaders in our host communities, it is clear that we cannot operate a ride that is up to our standards and the standards our riders have come to expect while also safeguarding the health and well being of our riders, volunteers, staff, and the general population.

Though this was a tough decision for everyone involved, we are appreciative of the support we’ve already received from our members during these uncertain times, and we will continue our advocacy, education, and outreach activities for the rest of this year.

We, the Board of Directors of the Florida Freewheelers, hope you are staying healthy and safe, and we look forward to 2021 when there will be more cycling events in a less eventful year.
