Ride Leaders

  Doug Folkerth

This group will provide riders the opportunity to develop and practice pace line riding techniques and skills at moderate speeds, over moderate distances that benefit the whole group. Goals for rides are to maintain an efficient single pace line, cruise at speeds from 17 to 19 mph on flat terrain, smoothly rotate the lead rider every few minutes and maintain group integrity. Distances for rides will range from 30 to 50 miles. The group will stop anytime someone experiences mechanical problems or a rider requests a stop. For rides longer than 30 miles the group will stop at approximately the half way point.

Larry Kaiser Riders must be able to ride safely in a single inline formation using appropriate pace line skills [http://gainesvillecyclingclub.org/ridingtips.html].  The pace line will follow traffic laws as highlighted on the club website http://gccfla.org/laws.html.

Essential Skills

*Concentrating on what you are doing in a pace line and anticipating problems!
*Lining up single file behind a lead cyclist to take maximum advantage of the "drag" effect of the riders to the front of you.
*Maintaining a distance of one to four feet wheel rim to wheel rim between yourself and the rider in front of you in order to gain some advantage of the drag effect.
*Riding smoothly and predictably!
*Yielding the lead by maintaining the pace, signaling a left move and moving clear of the line before slowing down.

Riders joining this group are expected to:
*Wear helmets while riding [Note: While mirrors are not required by law they are strongly recommended];
*Be able to repair a flat;
*Ride in line at the group’s pace;
*Maintain their position in the pace line until they reach the front using techniques e.g., soft pedaling or air braking;
*Call out and point out hazards to following riders;
*Never accelerate or brake quickly;
*Never sprint from the back to avoid colliding with a retiring lead rider;
*Draft smoothly by keeping their crank turning and using slightly more or less pedaling force to maintain a consistent gap.
*Use respectful riding etiquette, e.g., voicing “On Your Left” when passing a rider.

This group does not currently have any rides on the schedule.
