Robert Bruce “Bob” Newman, 78, passed away peacefully August 15, 2026 at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida with his wife by his side. Bob was born in Detroit, Michigan December 8, 1947, the son of Paul and Frances Newman. They and his beloved brother, Henry “Hank” Newman, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his sons, Steven Newman and Joseph Newman of Ormond Beach, grandchildren Rowan and Dexter Newman of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, Natalie Brooks of Gainesville, and his wife, Suzanne Newman.
Bob Newman grew up with extended family in Detroit. He recalled spending time at sporting events, at the lakes of Michigan in the family cabin and summers at Camp Tanuga on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. His father died unexpectedly of a heart attack when Bob was just 17, a senior in high school. His brother, Hank, eight years older, stepped in as surrogate father.
Bob attended Ferris State University and became a life-long Bulldogs fan as well as a Michigan Wolverines and Florida Gators fan. He married, had two boys, and moved to Florida in 1988. He later became a devoted bicyclist and married Suzanne Newman in 2002. He was past president and a long-time member of the Gainesville Cycling Club.
Interment was at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery on Friday, August 28 with Rabbi David Kaiman officiating. Although he spent the last couple of years with health problems, he never wavered in his enthusiasm for cycling. He would be proud of any support or enthusiasm for his favored sport such as donations to the Bikes for Vets project or the purchase of a Share the Road license plate.
