Auto Insurance?

Do I need UIM insurance?

Short answer: Yes.

If you're a cyclist, carrying Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage on your auto insurance policy is essential protection.

Even if you're not in a car, UM/UIM coverage can still apply when you're hit by a driver while cycling. If the at-fault driver has no insurance -- or not enough to cover your injuries and losses -- your UM/UIM policy steps in as though they had sufficient coverage. It can help pay for medical bills, lost wages, and more.

It is strongly recommended that cyclists carry the maximum amount of UM/UIM coverage available under their auto policies.

A few key things to know:
☑️ Cyclists are covered. Some insurance agents may mistakenly say UM/UIM doesn't apply to bike crashes. That's incorrect. If you have UM/UIM on your policy, it covers you when you're hit by an uninsured or underinsured motorist -- even on a bike.
☑️ Your insurer becomes your opponent. When filing a UM/UIM claim, you are technically making a claim against your own insurance company, and they may contest it.
☑️ Get permission before settling. If the at-fault driver has limited coverage, and you want to use your UIM benefits, you must get your insurer's written consent before accepting a settlement check from the driver's insurance. If you don't, your insurer could deny your UIM claim.
