Rescheduled Tour de Gainesville

Kimberley Mullins

Hello GCC Members!!

You still have time if you didn’t register the first time! We had to move our celebration back to Saturday, April 2 due to unfavorable weather conditions. Plus, we have added many sponsors and giveaways after the event. Our sponsors are Chuy’s, PDQ, Road ID, Gainesville Health and Fitness, Lloyd Clarke Sports, Texas Roadhouse, LifeSouth Foundation, Mr. Goodbike, Chamois Btt’r, and Bailey’s Health and Fitness.

The Gainesville High School (GHS) Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) is celebrating our 40th Anniversary. In honor of this celebration, we are hosting a Cycling Event at the Gainesville Hawthorne Trail. There are three courses, 30 miles, 20 miles and a ten-mile course. The registration page is located here: https://www.bikereg.com/tour-de-gainesville-cycling-event-celebrating-40th-anniversary-of-gainesville-high-school

GHS NJROTC Unit was established on February 19th, 1981 by the Chief of Naval Education and Training. The first Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) was Captain McGathy and the Naval Science Instructor (NSI) was Senior Chief Petty Officer Lyles. There were less than one hundred cadets with the initial unit. However, over the years NJROTC has expanded to more than a hundred- and twenty cadets annually.

The purpose of the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program in Gainesville High School is to instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.

Activities cadets or students can get involve in are air rifle, basic and exhibition drill, academics, athletics, orienteering, drone, and color guard. The unit participates in parades, Leadership Academy, Basic Leadership Training Camp, orientation visits to naval bases, and community service throughout the Alachua County surrounding area. Last year, GHS NJROTC was selected as Most Distinguished Unit for the 2020-2021 school year and completed over 4000 hours of Community Service.

All participants will receive a goody bag along with an event T-shirt. Also, make sure you check out our Cycling Jersey online. Even if you don’t participate and are interested in the jersey, you can purchase one. Don’t want to cycle, we can also use your help as a volunteer!

Proceeds from this event will be used to help with cadet trips, supplies for uniforms and equipment for drill and marksmanship teams. Additionally, a percentage will be used to help support local veteran’s associates and a charitable organization in Gainesville.

Thank you in advance for your support!
