It's probably obvious to anyone who knows me that when I became a cyclist a couple of years ago, my life changed. The machine captures the imagination. The sport transforms the body. Whether solo or with others, distance cycling provides a form of embodied meditation that is difficult to describe.

My football Saturdays have drifted steadily away from the gridiron and toward the peloton. This year, I haven't even checked what football team is playing whom, but I can tell you about the Giro Rosa and the Colorado Classic and the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España (those are bike races).

Whether this is a lifelong change, I cannot predict. But I can say the freedom, joy and spirituality I've found in cycling are profound. And my story is only one of many like it.
