Rumble Stripes

by Deborah Testa

My name is Deborah Testa, and I live in St. Augustine.  A few weeks ago, my husband and I went for a ride on Scenic A1A, a road we ride 4,000+ miles each year.  We were shocked to find rumble stripes, FDOT’s answer to road drift for motor vehicles.

I imagine they work great as it relates to road drift  for motor vehicles, but many cyclists in this area believe they are extremely dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians.  The good news:  St. Augustine was pilot site.  The not so good news:  the word is that the state of Florida, using federal $$, is hoping to put these throughout the State of Florida:  without informational meetings or input from local citizens.

I have already contacted FDOT and the Florida Bicycle Association about my concerns, and I’m in an open, dialogue with them.

INVITATION:  What I’d like to do now is to invite all cyclists throughout the state to come and ride A1A between Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine to test our rumble stripes and provide an honest evaluation as to whether or not you feel safer or not as a cyclist.

Your feedback is invaluable, so please email me or contact me with your thoughts.

Click here for a short video of what occurs when you hit a rumble stripe.  FDOT feels that this video is a testament to how great the rumble stripes work, as the cyclist was able to keep the bike in control.  I will let you be the judge.
