Alactic Training

by Coach K

Hey Y’all this month’s training idea is about using Alactic Training. Now doesn’t that sound fancy! Well what that really means is that you do an exercise that is of short duration (less than 10 sec.) so that your muscles do not generate Lactic Acid. We used to do these years ago in the GHS parking lot.

As an endurance athlete (Century rides and Ultra Marathons), I used to wonder why do something of such short duration and how could it possibly help. The answer is that it trains the neuromuscular system! Sort of like upgrading the software on your computer, whereas all the other traditional training will build more muscle or improve the cardiovascular system.

For your Alactic session, you will need to set up a short course -less than 10 sec.- and have nice approach and exit space. You start by riding towards the start line at normal pace and then switch to high speed cadence until you get to the finish line. At that point, go back to normal pace and pedal until you have a full recovery and then head back to start line.

The idea is that for each mini sprint, you are fully recovered and can give 100% focus to your technique. And since each sprint is such a short duration followed by long recovery, you can do tons of these without getting tired. And it fits in perfectly on recovery days because you are not generating Lactic Acid. A great training tool that is sadly overlooked.
