Depot Trail Closure

by Ally Gill

Gainesville bike commuters: be aware that the Depot Avenue Trail from W 6th ST to W 9th ST will be CLOSED, starting Monday, March 2nd, for approximately 2 months for major renovations that will include a new bridge over Tumblin' Creek, removal of contaminated soil, regrading, and repaving. Car traffic will be detoured around the construction zone via S 4th Avenue. Bikes can use S 5th Ave (near Tumblin' Creek Park and the new apartments nearby). If you ride the 6th St Trail to the Depot Trail to get to UF/Shands, the VA or points west, you WILL NOT be able to access the Depot Trail west of 6th ST. O'Steen staff informed me that the trail WILL be torn up and WILL NOT be accessible while the repaving project proceeds. West of the construction zone, the trail will remain open from the peanut roundabout near PK Yonge westward over the Helyx Bridge via the Kermit Sigmon Trail, as usual. Plan to re-route, if this is your daily commute route!
