Results! Veterans Day Poker Run

by Todd Leedy

It was a perfect day for riding and we had 55 cyclists on the road for either the 60 or 80 mile route options. We rolled out at 830 sharp en route to veterans monuments at Kanapaha Park, Newberry, High Springs, and Alachua before returning to the start at Bikes and More for the final card draw.

The 2013 podium was not as close as prior years since three riders put in power moves over the final stretch to separate from the peloton. The breakaway finished:

1st - Dean Mimms (3 of a kind = $75 gift card)

2nd - Mike Myers (two pair = $50 gift card)

3rd - Al Holt (pair of aces = $25 gift card)

Podium finishers may collect their prizes during business hours at Bikes and More.

The lantene rouge prize was hotly contested and required going to the official replay for a decision. But in the end, Greg Ferrone had the worst hand of all. He wins a new pair of sunglasses and a special plaque commemorating his last place finish, all from Alligator Island Optical & Art Framing. Greg, you know where to go.

I would like to thank our volunteers, without whom this event would not have been possible: Nance Leedy, Arden Leedy, Jim Wilson, and Jack Gamble (WWII vet!). Also, of course, thanks to our generous sponsors who sweetened the pot for our competition.

Thanks to all the riders who came out for a great cause - we raised $600 for the Gainesville Fisher House on a day many of us would have been out riding anyway. Look for us again on 11/11/14.
