Holiday Party

Our Holiday Party Committee is continuing to work on plans for this year's party! We'll be meeting at the Holy Faith Church social hall, 747 NW 43rd St on Friday, December 11, for set up at 5 pm, social hour at 6 pm, with dinner at 7 pm.

We still need a few more folks to cook turkeys. There is a link on the RSVP page where you can sign up. The Club will reimburse you for the cost of a turkey and disposable pan. Use this same link to sign up to bring a side dish.

The committee has devised a new game, "Need To Know". There will be prizes! On coming into the party each attendee will be assigned one of the following 4 teams:

  1. GCC and Gainesville
  2. Bike history and cycling records and record holders
  3. Bike mechanics and safety
  4. Bicycle trips and trails

RSVP in the Members Area.

Board Elections

We're looking for candidates for at least two positions on the GCC Board of Directors. The Board meets once a month, usually on a Monday evening.

We have a new position, Membership Services Director. This person will be responsible making sure that all new members get a personal call soon after joining the Club. We want to be able to have someone personally answer questions, such as "What group should I ride with?", "Can I just show up for a ride?", "How can I get help fixing my bike?", etc. We've found that many persons join the Club, but never get up the nerve to actually participate in any rides or events. This position is not limited to the calling function, it is up to the imagination and drive of the incumbent to make it work.

The Member At Large is a position on the Board (limited to a one year term) where you get to learn the ropes of the Board and prepare to fill some other position in the Club. We look for a new person to fill this position every year.

We have a candidate for another new position, Education Director. All other incumbent Board members are continuing, but you can run for office if you choose (we've had a couple of contested elections in recent years). Contact the Chief of Staff or any Board member if you are interested in being on the Board.

Bike Board Vacancies

The Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Board advises Alachua County, the City of Gainesville and the Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization for the Gainesville Urbanized Area (MTPO) regarding bicycle and pedestrian transportation issues. Each of these jurisdictions appoints four [4] members. The City of Gainesville also appoints a Student Seat Representative.

There are several vacancies on the Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Board [1 County; 1 Regular City & 1 Student City; & 3 MTPO] available for appointments. The MTPO will make appointments at its December 14, 2015 meeting. The deadline for submitting an application is Monday, November 30, 2015. Here is a link for an application for MTPO appointment.

SEA Community Festival and Bike & Camp

Join your GCC friends as we bike to Armstrong, FL to enjoy the SEA Community Rails to Trails Festival for the second year in a row.

The Festival takes place on Saturday, December 5th, 2015 from 12:00 noon until 9:00 p.m. at Armstrong Park, 4950 Harvey Ave., Elkton, FL 32033 (just off State Road 207, east of Hastings, and about 12 miles west of St. Augustine).

The SEA Community Rails to Trails Festival raises funds for the SEA Community Help Center that serves the needs of rural and at-risk children and families experiencing crisis in the Spuds, Elkton, and Armstrong communities in rural St. Johns County. The SEA Community has a unique place in Florida's history. Armstrong, FL is one of the oldest African-American settlements in Florida. It is home to descendants of freed West African slaves (the Gullah Geechee) who settled along what is now designated the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor that includes the coastal plains ("low country") and sea islands of the US South from North Carolina to Florida. The West African agricultural and culinary traditions and unique Creole language that have been passed down through generations are alive and well in Armstrong.

The Festival will feature food vendors, crafts, cycling on the beautiful St. Augustine-Palatka Trail, and, of course, live music! You won’t want to miss Willie Green, who's back again this year to play his timeless Delta Blues. Bring cash, bring friends, and don't forget to bring your bike. The trail is just a few steps away from the festivities and a short ride from the campground.

Detailed info on biking and camping to the event can be found at SEA Community Bike & Camp, or contact Ally Gill at (352) 745-2011. ***NOTE: campsite reservations must be made by NOVEMBER 30TH, so don't wait!** December is a great time to bike and camp. Come on out!
