Join Our Challenge Team!

The League of American Bicyclists National Bike Challenge is underway. The Gainesville Cycling Club Team is continuing to sign up members to defend our national #1 title from last year. The Omaha team is beginning to catch up to us on number of team members, so we need YOU to sign up and log your miles.

The way the competition works is that you earn 20 points for each day that you ride, plus a point for each mile. Someone who rides a mile a day around their neighborhood earns 147 points a week; a weekend warrior doing 50 mile rides on Saturday and Sunday will earn 140 points. As you can see, everyone can significantly contribute to our team by riding just a few minutes, but by doing it most every day.

Miles for each month MUST be entered in the month ridden. On Saturday, May 31, make sure you get your May miles into the system; on Sunday (June 1) it will be too late. You'll still be able to join our team, but it will be too late to add your May miles.

There are several ways on the web site to join a team. The easiest is to click on Leaderboards (below the blueish bar), then click on Teams; scroll down to find the listing of teams, point to Gainesville Cycling Club -- a Join button will appear for you to click.

Logging your miles manually on the web site is quick, and once you've done it a few times, easy. You can also hook up a Garmin type device to log your miles using several different web site options -- this is not required.

The Kickstand has moved!

from The Kickstand

The Kickstand moved its physical location to Project GRACE (Gainesville Regional Alachua County Empowerment) on 5/10/14. This is the site of Gainesville's One Stop homeless resource center.

Services to the public will start in Fall of 2014 with a target start of September 13, 2014. During Summer of 2014, The Kickstand will conduct special projects and training. Two kinds of volunteers are needed, facilitators and mechanics. Residents of GRACE will be taught skills to perform both functions. The public is welcome to participate. During summer, services are by appointment only by emailing gainesvillekickstand.com.

Facilitation training will be held on how to manage The Kickstand space on a daily basis. This includes, among other things, operations, accounting, inventory management, opening, and closing the space.

Mechanic training will be held to teach how, among other things, to repair bikes, recycle unusable items, and organize all material items.

Facilitators and mechanics will be taught small business skills including marketing items for sale (how to price and value the worth of goods, take photos, prepare, and sales), maintaining documentation, and managing operations.

Again the public is welcome to participate, but must email us to know the dates of training sessions or shop hours.
