Gainesville Velo Swap

Sunday, December 22

Welcome to the first annual Gainesville Velo Swap, presented by the Gainesville Cycling Club and Bikes & More.

As a seller / vendor, this is an opportunity to shift some of those dusty bikes, frames and parts laying around the house. As an consumer, you can take advantage of the many deals that will likely be on offer.

The swap meet will be held along the parking lot side of Bikes and More, 2133 NW 6th Street, Gainesville, Florida. Sellers / vendors will setup from 7:30am - 9:00am, with the swap itself opening to consumers at 9:00am, and running until 1:00pm.

Seller / vendor spots will be FREE. However, you will be responsible for supplying your own table or tent.

To reserve a space or ask a question, please drop us a line at gainesvilleveloswap@gmail.com.

Needed: A few (more) good ovens

The 2013 GCC Holiday Party is on Friday, December 6.  We’re looking for a few members who can each roast a turkey, carve it up, and bring it to the Holy Faith Church before 6 pm.  If you work on Fridays you obviously are not a candidate (unless you need an excuse to take a vacation day).  The Club will buy the turkeys and provide an aluminum roasting pan.

The number of birds we’ll need will depend on the number who sign up for the event, but I’m thinking four should do it, so we need at least four ovens.  We’ll put any additional volunteers on hot standby in case we get a higher sign up than expected.

Reply by email if you have an available oven!

Veterans Day Poker Run

It was a perfect day for riding and we had 55 cyclists on the road for either the 60 or 80 mile route options. We rolled out at 830 sharp en route to veterans monuments at Kanapaha Park, Newberry, High Springs, and Alachua before returning to the start at Bikes and More for the final card draw.

The 2013 podium was not as close as prior years since three riders put in power moves over the final stretch to separate from the peloton. The breakaway finished:

1st - Dean Mimms (3 of a kind = gift card)

2nd - Mike Myers (two pair = gift card)

3rd - Al Holt (pair of aces = gift card)

The lantene rouge prize was hotly contested and required going to the official replay for a decision. But in the end, Greg Ferrone had the worst hand of all. He wins a new pair of sunglasses and a special plaque commemorating his last place finish, all from Alligator Island Optical & Art Framing. Greg, you know where to go.

I would like to thank our volunteers, without whom this event would not have been possible: Nance Leedy, Arden Leedy, Jim Wilson, and Jack Gamble (WWII vet!). Also, of course, thanks to our generous sponsors who sweetened the pot for our competition.

Thanks to all the riders who came out for a great cause - we raised $600 for the Gainesville Fisher House on a day many of us would have been out riding anyway. Look for us again on 11/11/14.

GCC 101: Life Memberships

When you renew your membership, and the term will end after your 75th birthday, you'll get a membership card with "LIFE MEMBER" on it.

It’s not hard to calculate your renewal cost if you would like to extend it for life if you have an individual membership. First, look at your expiration date (in the Members Area, About Me block). Calculate the number of years needed to extend it beyond your 75th birthday. The basic formula is $12 a year plus $3 (less $1 if you are in the bonus).

For two person families, calculate the number of years needed for each member. The amount needed is $15 per year for the youngest person plus $5 (less $1 if in the bonus). Subtract $3 for each of the years in the difference between the two members ages.

It's important that your birthdate on the club records be correct, as otherwise you might receive a fraudulent life membership. (Birthdates can be hidden from other club members if you are sensitive.)
