Archer Braid Trail Opening

by Ally Gill

Celebrate the grand opening of the Archer Braid Trail on Saturday, June 15th at 10:00 am at the Archer trailhead with a ribbon cutting ceremony, a bike parade, a bike rodeo, raffled prizes, free giveaways, bike helmet giveaway with free expert fitting, health screenings and more family-friendly fun. The trailhead is located at the base of the Archer water tower on US 27/41, about 0.1 of a mile south of Archer Rd.

We're looking for a few more volunteers to help with the Bike Rodeo. Email if you can help. Also email if you have a business with something to donate for the raffle.

FDOT will have a representative there, so this event is a good opportunity for cyclists who support building more cycling infrastructure, and expansion of Florida's multi-use trail system, to speak directly to the people who make it happen.

Special thanks to the event sponsors: The Archer Chamber of Commerce, City of Alachua, Archer Ace Hardware, Archer Automotive, Chain Reaction Bicycles, Dowling Signs, Gainesville Cycling Club, Law Offices of C. David Coffey, PA, Maddox Foundry and Machine Works, Midwest Feed, Save A Lot, Sana Fe College Davis Center, The Sustainable Design Group, UF College of Nursing. Also, raffle prizes have been donated by 8th Avenue Bike & Coffee House, Bikes & More, Cycle Therapy, Swift Cycle, Mr. Goodbike, Gator Cycle, The Adventure Club of Gainesville, Monica's Cococastile Soap, Dragonfly Graphics, Messenger Mirrors.

Join Your Group!

by Roger Pierce

The core of what the GCC does, riding bikes, is done in riding groups. If you're riding with the club (and you should be if you're a member!), you're riding with one of our many riding groups. If you're not familiar with riding groups, go to the main web site and point to Rides, then click on Riding Groups.

It's important that you actually join the group that you ride with. Do this by going to the Ride page in the Members Area. Scroll down below the Ride Schedule, and click on "Join A Group".

When you are in a group, you can receive emails when a ride is scheduled, and you'll be on the group's email list. If you're not a member, you may miss an important notice, such as a weather cancellation, or a last minute change in the ride start. We recommend that you keep the election to receive emails when a group ride is posted or modified.

We're beating on Group Captains and Ride Leaders to stop using GCCMail for notices that are specific only to their group. So it's important that you join your group to get group updates, and allow your leaders to stop using GCCMail for group communications.

Join the Florida Bicycle Association!

by Roger Pierce

If you have not indicated you are a current FBA member, and haven't previously used the benefit, you can join the Florida Bicycle Association AT NO COST for an introductory year. Just click the button in the big blue header on the News page in the Members Area.

We encourage all GCC members to join the Florida Bicycle Association, which is the primary advocacy and lobbying organization for cyclists in Florida.

Jersey Head Count

We'll be offering the Classic club jersey, with the order closing on August 11. In order to know what quantity discount we can qualify for, we need a count of those who plan on purchasing a jersey. Please RSVP in the Members Area if you want one! The price will be good for a high quality jersey.

National Challenge

We need YOU for our National Challenge Team. So far, only 18% of the club has signed on! Click the bike to get started.
