Electric Bicycles

There are three classifications of electric bicycles.

A Class 1 electric bicycle only uses pedal assistance and has a maximum speed of 20 mph. Use of these bicycles is permitted on rides where the maximum posted speed is less than 20 mph.

A Class 2 electric bicycle is equipped with a motor that may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle and that is not capable of providing assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour. Due to their operating characteristics, these bicycles are not permitted on club group rides.

A Class 3 electric bicycle only uses pedal assistance and has a maximum speed of 28 mph. These bicycles should only be used by experienced riders who need them to continue to ride with their groups. It is not appropriate for less skilled riders to use them to move up to a faster riding group.

In addition to these recognized classifications, electric bicycles that have been modified to override speed limitations or that are built with unlimited speed exist. These bicycles are prohibited on club rides.
